How to Remove or Replace a Monogram

remove a monogram or replace a monogram with new name

One of our most commonly asked questions is “Can you remove a monogram?”

The answer is… “Maybe!” Here are the risks in trying to remove the embroidery:

Issue 1: Removing stitching can leave a hole in the garment

When we try to remove embroidery, it very well may leave a hole in the garment. The “riskiness” of removing a monogram depends on how tight the stitching is (the bigger the thread loops, the better), the fabric it’s embroidered on (knit almost definitely leads to a hole), and the stabilizer used in the original project. Even in the best case scenario, there’s never a 0% chance of making a hole.

Issue 2: Removing stitching can take hours

There are a few tools you can use to remove stitching. A basic seam ripper is the easiest/cheapest tool to try at home. Put something on the tv and carefully pluck out each stitch (from the backside of the fabric!). There are also a few electric seam rippers that work very well but are pricier. We don’t offer embroidery removal services, since it can take an hour to remove and still create a hole. Instead, we encourage you to try it out on your own if you’re okay with the risk. We’ll even loan you a seam ripper if you need it. It’s long, slow, risky work but you may find it’s worth the effort for a very special item.

Issue 3: Indentation or Fading

Even if you do the best job removing the stitches, there may be a faded area behind the embroidery or an indentation. Steaming and ironing can help. It will likely get better after washing a few times as well. But it may leave some mark on the fabric forever.

What is the best way to Replace a Monogram?

While we don’t always reccomend trying to remove the monogram, we do support you trying to reuse items with a monogram on them already! Here are the best ways we’ve found to recycle those hand-me-downs, maiden names, or thrift store finds.

Option 1: Carefully remove monogram and embroider over it.

As we covered above, this solution isn’t fool proof. But it can be worth a try and you haven’t lost much if it doesn’t work. Here are a few examples where a name or initials were embroidered on top of a former name or initials. They are typically only noticeable by the eagle eyed.

All of the above photos are items where a new name or initials were embroidered on top of a spot where one was removed

Option 2: Applique a “Patch” over the old Embroidery

This is the cheapest and simplest method! You can choose a matching fabric to create the patch with, or go with a similar color to the fabric itself. There are many times it looks like it was intentionally designed to be done this way. You can do this without removing any embroidery at all, or wait til after you’ve tried to remove and accidentally created a hole. This method can also cover up a rip or a hole that was made another way!

Option 3: Find someone with the same name or monogram

If you don’t want to remove or re-embroider the personalized item, you still don’t need to throw it away! In many cases, there is someone else with the same monogram. Check Facebook for Monogram Resale Groups for your name or letter. (If you have a “Noah”, look for the “N Monogram Resale” group for example and post it for sale in there. Locally, you could post in groups or on Marketplace for free. If it’s free, people are more likely to think of others with that same name they could pass it along to. The goal with giving something away for free is to keep an item out of a landfill (and make someone else’s day too!)
